The Four Sacred Shrines of Chardham
Yamunotri is the first point of visit to Chardham Yatra Package from Haridwar and is located at a height of 3,293 meters. Here, Goddess Yamuna is a sister of Lord Yama, and she is considered a sacred shrine. The Devi is worshipped inside the Yamunotri Temple, built by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal in black marble form.
Major Attractions: Surya Kund, a hot water spring; Divya Shila, a sacred rock offering prayers before entering the temple; and the scenic trek to the temple.
How to Reach: The journey on foot takes about 6 km from Janki Chatti. Ponies and palanquins are available for those who cannot trek.
The second Dham is Gangotri, the source of the Ganga River and at an altitude of 3,100 meters. In Hindu mythology, Goddess Ganga came to earth to purify the sins of King Bhagirath's ancestors.
Main Attractions: Gangotri Temple (erected by General Amar Singh Thapa), Bhagirathi Shila (the rock on which King Bhagirath sat in meditation), and Gaumukh Glacier (the real source of the Ganges, 19 km from Gangotri).
How to Reach: Kedarnath is accessible by road, and pilgrims can travel by vehicle up to the temple.
Kedarnath is one of the most important sites of worship of Lord Shiva and is one of the shrines in Luxury Chardham Yatra Package and the Panch Kedar. According to popular legend, the Pandavas, who had just committed the great sin of killing their cousins in the Kurukshetra war, wanted to rid themselves of the sin. So they came to Kedarnath to receive the blessings of Lord Shiva. Situated at 3,583 meters, in front of the snow-clad Himalayas, stands the temple made of massive stone slabs.
Major Attractions: Kedarnath Temple, Bhairavnath Temple, and Vasuki Tal, a glacial lake offering breathtaking panorama views.
How to Reach: Devotees need to trek 16 km from Gaurikund. Those who prefer aerial journeys can opt for helicopter services.
The last Dham, Badrinath, is the temple of Lord Vishnu. It is at a height of 3,300 meters. According to history, it was founded by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century A.D. A beautiful black stone figure of Lord Vishnu, 1 meter in height, in meditative posture is present inside the temple.
Major Tourist Attractions: Tapt Kund, the natural hot spring; Mana Village. Which is the last village before the Indo-Tibetan border; and Charan Paduka. A rock on which Lord Vishnu's footprints are said to be printed.
How to Reach: It is well connected by road, and buses and taxis are available from major cities in Uttarakhand.
The best time to take the Chardham Yatra Family Package is from April to June and September to November. The monsoon season, July and August, should be avoided because of landslides and roadblocks. Winter months experience heavy snowfall, and the temples remain closed.

Flight: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant airport at Dehradun.
Train: Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Dehradun are the nearest railway stations.
Road: State transport buses and private taxis are available to all four Dhams.
The helicopter services can transport those who do not wish to trek much from Dehradun to all four shrines. This service is convenient for older people and those with less time.
